Waking up and getting out of bed in the morning, especially if you’ve had a late night or it’s cold outside of that comfortable, warm duvet, is hard. Alarm clocks help by initially shocking you awake, but they have that convenient snooze button that repeatedly gives you a “just another 10 minutes” option. Before you know it, an hour has passed and you’re late for work.

Ruggie aims to fix that with a very simple, yet effective take on the humble alarm clock. Instead of a small device that sits on your bedside table with buttons to press, Ruggie is a mat that sits on the floor. To turn off the alarm when it sounds, you have to stand on it forcing you to get out of bed.

Ruggie started life as a crowdfunding idea, but it has achieved over 900% of its funding target on Indiegogo. That means you can order one right now at a cost of $79, or a double pack for $149. Ruggie is expected to start shipping in September.

The mat has a bright LED display showing you the time, but also doubling as a night light. It has a touch sensor inside to detect when you stand on it, and the surface is a very comfortable high density memory foam, which shouldn’t be too cold on the feet. You can also customize the alarm and use the included USB cable to record custom motivational messages to yourself or whoever will be using the Ruggie.

Making you stand up is an effective way to get you past the “just a bit longer” phase of waking up. The fact you have to stand on it for multiple seconds should go a long way towards killing the urge to get back under the duvet. The desire to drink some coffee and get dressed should take over pretty quickly.
